“A Trade Gun’s First Meat”

“Snapshot Saturday”

A bobwhite quail beside a new chief's-grade trade gun.

The swale hole narrowed to a point at the edge of a prairie-grass meadow. Bobwhite quail flushed in all directions like brown lightning bolts. The new chiefs-grade trade gun’s tumbler clicked to full cock as the brass turtle sight swung hard to the right. A quick flash…a clap of thunder…roiling white smoke…and the evening’s modest meal tumbled earthward. Old Northwest Territory in the Year of our Lord, 1798.
