“Minding the Island Trail”

Minding_The_Island_Trail

A traditional woodsman sits behind a fallen wild cherry tree.

Wind pushed a wild cherry tree up the steep slope. The unusual circumstance left most of the cherry’s root secured; the tree was alive and still growing. With time, the downed calamity became a favorite haunt, because the location afforded an excellent, down-wind view of the trail leading from the big swamp’s second island. Old Northwest Territory, 1792.
