A traditional woodsman hunting fox squirrels with a Dickert rifle.

Having not shot the Jacob Dickert .40-caliber rifle in some time, I pinned a witch hazel leaf to a rotted log with a locust thorn for a few practice shots. That fox squirrel hunt is one of a handful of woodland adventures that did not include “Old Turkey Feathers.” Old Northwest Territory, 1798.
