A dejected voyageur walks through the water gate at Fort Michilimackinac

The steady pounding of white-capped waves on the sandy beach echoed within the fort’s palisades. Beyond the water gate, the big bark canoes rested on their sides, sheltering baled and crated trade goods. The little flotilla would not leave Fort Michilimackinac that afternoon in August of 1775.
